Today I am going to shed some light upon a very influential facet of our Pangea Movement, and PRSVR Brand by interviewing Tekh Togo. With this interview, I didn't prepare any questions beforehand. Not only because I have been busy, but mainly because the best situations within Pangea Estates occur on the fly and without real calculation but authentic direction. I asked questions that I as an individual would like to know about Togo Onasis aka Togo Speilberg aka The Chancellor aka The Technician aka The Narrator of Crumbs and now known to you as Tekh Togo
What would you like to start off with? What is Tekh Togo exactly? Where would you like to begin your story Tekh?
Well I will get into the name. A lot of people ask where I get the the name from. Well I started off in my artistry as The Technician. So even then, people would call me Tech for short within my camp and out within the city. So Tekh, thats simple and plain. The Togo part, was from this cat his name is Duke Togo from this Japanimation flick from back in the day Gogo 13. It was also a cheesy video game on Nintendo too back in the day as well. "Yea!! He had like the green or purple suit on!!!" Yea..He was an ill cat though. I feel like the way he maneuvered was like an iller james bond. Like he don't get caught up on all the bs like bond did.. like he still smashed buns and gets it in, but he doesn't get caught up in the buns. Duke Togo wasn't like that. like bond would get caught up in it, and be up in the room and then have to blow out. Togo took care of that and kept it moving and quiet as kept he did a lot of damage. So i felt like he was just a cool dude, and i'm laid back so i put all that into my character and into the raps..like thats tekh togo. Cats is gettting assassinated...easy in the raps. Like this man merked me so smooth ima just die right here..im not even gonna cause a commotion. Im just gonna bow out and die..so thats what it is
Going from tech to tekh what made you change
I can't even call it..i mean..you know when like other rappers just may feel you need a change or pull out something that may intrigue you or like how that sounds. Its really nothing all that complex to it. like at times rappers have a thousand different names and then you get to something that just sticks to you, and you run with it. Tekh Togo was that for me. When its you its you, and you just roll with it. But even when I was The Technician, like that name was derived from when I was part of the MADD Squad (shout out to the madd team) I was the cat that like did the beats, and messed with the boards, and studied the compressors and mic pre amps. Nobody else knew the lingo in the studio, so that even is where The Technician came from.
Being from Grand Rapids Michigan, what was like your influence for even wanting to rap? Like i know you are an artist period which is likely my biggest admiration of you is that you are a true artist..what made you channel that energy into the music?
Well we grew up on hip hop, so I was an artist...and I am still an artist..like I still draw, but back then, we used to freestyle and everything just being around the influence of hip hop and the rapping was just an expansion of the art. I had to have been in high school at the time or maybe after that I can't recall, but when Souls of Mischief first came out, that was like when I started writing THEIR lyrics down and telling myself "I HAVE TO LEARN THIS." That was like the time back then like when I was younger I used to put the headphone jack into the auxilary joint and mimic the lyrics and create my own raps even back then. Like listening to Eazy E, or Slick Rick back when I was a shorty and going into that zone like even back then. BUt when that SOM came out, and just being able to see that and like how their style was different, it was ill, and to me it was crazy, but at that point like i got into it and seeing whats good with other cats, and really trying to rhyme and testing my skills to see if I could do this. I definitely give cfedit to them..i was in that WU era.
Within that, you are a very laid back ind, but when did you realize that this is what you were going to do? Like even if it takes you 20 years, this is what im gonna do?
Its like i'm laid back, and i'm quiet, but I am naturally entertaining...lol..like i am never nervous on stage, or butterflies or anything. Like some people just naturally go in. And thats my chamber...I can channel it on and off.
You are the cat in GR who everybodys big brother listened to..how do you feel about your body of work and your output to date?
Its just now coming up to speed. Its been there. its a lot of work in the archives, and I feel like its that time where we can bring it back to where it should have been even awhile back. Like now, its people that know me in GR and that was surprising because people have really embraced the music and what I am trying to do here whereas I felt that they didn't, or wouldn't know. Its definitely time to expand that though.
To date, whats the one song that you be like thats the dopest song I have ever made?
It doesn't exist...lol..Not that I don't like my music, but every day my favorite song I have made changes everyday. I may tell you Flying Saucers today, and Ill Pictures tomorrow, but when I go to the studio next week, I may say that song, so I stopped commenting on things like that about a year ago.
Whats a song that you've heard and been around, and wished you had been around for that creative process or in that studio session?
Man...I wish I was bouncing around in studios when like Illmatic was being made, like during his whole era, or during the WU prominent era. That whole era of 94-98 I wish I was bouncing around in that era.
Within your creative process, what does it consist of if you have one?
Man...wake up early..first get up, seems like the mind is fresh. Hopefully you get a lotta good rest. Thoughts is coming thru..a lotta times, like Im not gonna get on my Hov and say I memorize a song right there, but a lot of thoughts or bars will come to my mind, and in my head i formulate how I can put it together and it'll get written down later like yea...i'ma say that. But what a lot of rappers will tell you, its hard to find inspiration a lot of times because it's not a lot of great music to go to for it right now. So a lot of times, you will have to force yourself and sit yourself down and saying I am going to listen to this beat and I am not going to move and just zone out. At times, cats will tell themselves "i'm not feeling it right now" so they will go back to it later, but at times it takes the discipline to really just sit down with it and see what comes of it.
You did mention that their is not a lot of great music out there in this era. Is their anyone that you have heard that you like and can gain insight from?
Ummmm....the last time I came up here with ya'll we were listening to that Jay Electronica..i heard that and was like yea...He sounds like he's got his own planet. So yea...Jay Electronica
You have done several projects now that have gotten nothing short of great reviews ie The Collection, and The Crumbs Project. What more do you feel needs to be done as an artist in order for you to be in a position where the work isn't all for free anymore?
Well once people like your material, but once that time comes, they will let you know. I feel once we have flooded an area with quality music repeatedly, it will get to a point where people are beyond happy to support the art and they feel they want to have it. They are getting something they want for their money which makes it a fair exchange. They are using their money for something that they want and it makes it an even trade off.
What form of art best expresses Tekh Togo?
Black and White. I love how Ansel Adams does his thing...like I wish I could live in black and white...for some reason I like Black and White almost more than color...like I'ma find a plasma that shows the picture in Black and White..no settings changed, just came that way!!
You are an avid admirer of Ralph Lauren, namely Polo with hints into the Purple and Black Labels, but what is it about Polo that leads you so far into it?
Its like, Its classic, so I love pieces that never go out of style..Like I never was trendy...like maybe one or two times I fell into a trend, looking stupid in the pic like damn..i DID do that! But other than that, i never got into USED Jeans or Cross Colours, I was always on to something that I could wear 10 years down the line and still look fresh. With Ralphy its like Its always classic garments, not too gawdy, and the items that are gawdy, I still like and can deal with. But personally, the catalog has been slipping so it comes in handy that Ralphy has a style that is timeless and can still resonate in its current state.
